Horace; Odes Book Two (25 pages)

Details

The Odes are a collection of four books of lyric poems. Books 1-3 were published in 23 BC. A fourth book was published in 13 BC.

Horace, a leading Roman lyric poet, saw his career progress during the reign of Augustus, as Rome moved from a Republic to an Empire. Some viewed Horace as adept at managing a level of independence in his writing, while others thought he placated Augustus. John Dryden described Horace as a well-mannered court slave. Born in 65 BC, Horace lived to the age of 56, and most of his major works were produced between 35-10 BC.

We'll be working with poet and classicist David Ferry as our baseline translation of Horace. Ferry translated the Epistles in one volume. In a second volume, Ferry translated The Odes, and Carmen Saeculare. I highly recommended sourcing both of these volumes as we spend a few months on Horace. In addition, I've purchased two Oxford World Classic versions which have some overlap. One covers the Odes and Epodes (Ferry didn't translate the Epodes). Another covers the Satires and Epistles (Ferry didn't translate the Satires).

If you just want to purchase two books, I'd suggest the two Ferry books (and then read digital copies of the Satires and Epodes). Note that Ferry prints the original Latin on each left-hand page opposite. Hopefully Andrea can get a hold of these two bilingual Ferry editions.
