Juneteenth Celebration in Historic Richmond Town

Details

Join us at Historic Richmond Town on Staten Island to honor Juneteenth, the national holiday commemorating the end of slavery in America. A $15 ticket booked in advance gives “open house” access to events in town homes, shops, the oldest schoolhouse in U.S., and a tavern. The centerpiece of the event is a Juneteenth Reenactment by the Freedom Players.

Historic Richmond Town is described as an open-air museum with living history. For nearly two centuries, Richmond Town served as the county seat of Staten Island. The County Courthouse and historic buildings date back to the 1800's and several structures date all the way back to the early 1700's.

Highlights of the Juneteenth event include hearth cooking, print making, basket making, carpentry, Jumping the Broom, pop-up exhibit in historical museum, and a voter rights discussion at Guyon Tavern. Time permitting, we'll visit St. Andrew's Church and the Hebrew Burial Ground.

MEET: 9:45 a.m. at the Whitehall Staten Island Ferry (Manhattan) near restrooms on upper level of the terminal. We’ll take the 10 a.m. ferry and at 10:25 a.m. dash to Bus S74 on Ramp C in St. George Ferry Terminal. (Use restrooms on ferry.) Bus ride takes approximately 45 minutes.
Drivers please check website for driving directions. Plenty of parking behind courthouse and meet group at the tables near Eggers Ice Cream around 11:30 a.m.

BRING: Water, snacks, lunch. When we arrive, we'll have lunch and use nearby restrooms in the Court House where you'll also find maps and a gift shop. Eggers Ice Cream, established in 1932, opens at 1 p.m. for an afternoon treat.

ENTRY: Your ticket is valid from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Purchase $15 ticket online in advance. Juneteenth Celebration — Historic Richmond Town

END: We’ll take the S74 bus back to the St. George Ferry. (Group departure time to be decided at group’s convenience; bus is available anytime.)

HIKE LEADER: Kiki Black, 929-425-4212.
Pam Cress, 917-597-2664, will meet group in Ferry Terminal on Manhattan side.
Please note in comments if you plan to meet us on Staten Island, either at the ferry terminal or driving to Richmond Town.
